After more than 40 days of political gridlock, the United States may finally see its government back in action. President Donald Trump announced on Sunday that a bipartisan Senate agreement has been reached to fund the government through January 30.
The deal negotiated by Senators Jeanne Shaheen, Angus King, and Maggie Hassan, along with Senate Majority Leader John Thune, includes a full reversal of Trump&rsquo;s previous firings of federal employees. It also introduces safeguards to prevent similar dismissals in the future and ensures continued funding for food stamps through fiscal year 2026.
Republicans reportedly secured at least ten Democratic votes to advance the measure. As part of the compromise, GOP leaders have agreed to schedule a vote on Affordable Care Act subsidies in December, a move aimed at bridging partisan divides.
If approved in the Senate, the bill will proceed to the House of Representatives before heading to the White House for Trump&rsquo;s signature, potentially ending the shutdown within days.
Once enacted, all federal agencies will resume operations, and furloughed employees will receive back pay as stipulated under the Government Employee Fair Treatment Act of 2013. Services such as national parks, tax processing, and passport issuance have been halted since October 1 and are expected to reopen soon, though lingering backlogs could cause delays similar to the 2018-2019 shutdown.
