Trade Minister Yeo Han-koo chaired a high-level pan-government meeting with officials from various ministries including finance, agriculture, oceans, and land, all of which handle sectors affected by U.S. tariffs and non-tariff trade issues. The session aimed to craft a robust response plan for the anticipated intensive negotiations with Washington in the coming weeks.
Yeo urged ministries to propose actionable solutions that could lead to a &ldquo;win-win&rdquo; outcome. &ldquo;With a democratically elected government now in place, we must make the most of this opportunity to complete trade negotiations that strengthen our industrial competitiveness and support new growth engines,&rdquo; Yeo stated.
Although plans for a bilateral presidential meeting at the G7 summit in Canada fell through due to U.S. President Donald Trump&rsquo;s early departure amid the Israel-Iran crisis, ministerial-level talks and technical consultations are expected to continue soon.
South Korea seeks to secure full or partial exemptions from steep U.S. tariffs, including a 25% duty on steel and levies on automobile exports. The suspension of these tariffs is set to expire on July 8, adding urgency to Seoul&rsquo;s diplomatic efforts.
The U.S. has long cited South Korea's trade surplus and several non-tariff barriers, such as its ban on U.S. beef from cattle older than 30 months, auto emission rules, and restrictions on foreign data exports, as key issues.
