Russia launched one of its most intense aerial assaults since the start of the war on Kyiv early Sunday, firing hundreds of drones and missiles, Ukrainian authorities reported. The attacks left at least three dead, including a 12-year-old girl, and dozens injured across multiple cities.
Kyiv's Mayor Vitali Klitschko confirmed a fire at a state cardiological hospital. Southern city Zaporizhzhia was also heavily hit, leaving 16 people injured, including three children. Residents sought shelter in metro stations, some spending the night underground.
Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha condemned the attack, urging Russian President Vladimir Putin to recognize the human and economic consequences of the war.
Videos circulating online showed multiple buildings on fire and anti-aircraft fire in Kyiv as drones flew overhead. Neighbouring Poland closed airspace near two southeastern cities and scrambled jets in response. The attacks were reported to still be ongoing as of 9:15 a.m. local time.
The assault marks one of the deadliest overnight drone and missile barrages since the beginning of Russia&rsquo;s full-scale invasion of Ukraine.
