Romania's Top Court Dismisses Far-Right Candidate&rsquo;s Bid to Annul Presidential Election

Romania&rsquo;s Constitutional Court has unanimously rejected a petition by far-right presidential candidate George Simion to annul the recent national vote, ruling on Thursday that the claims of electoral fraud and foreign interference were &ldquo;unfounded.&rdquo;
The decision comes just days after the fiercely contested presidential runoff, in which pro-European candidate and Bucharest mayor Nicușor Dan secured victory with 53.6% of the vote &mdash; a lead of over 829,000 ballots.
Simion, the 38-year-old leader of the ultra-nationalist Alliance for the Unity of Romanians (AUR), had filed his request for annulment on Tuesday, alleging widespread manipulation of the electoral process. He claimed, without providing substantiating evidence, that foreign actors &mdash; notably France and Moldova &mdash; had interfered in the vote, and alleged that ballots had been cast in the names of deceased individuals.
Despite dramatic language in the filing &mdash; including assertions of possessing &ldquo;irrefutable evidence&rdquo; of fraud &mdash; Simion's claims were not supported by documentation or verifiable sources. The Constitutional Court, after deliberations on Thursday, ruled that there was no legal basis to sustain the allegations and reaffirmed that its ruling is final.
&ldquo;The Court has continued the coup!&rdquo; Simion wrote defiantly in a Facebook post following the decision. &ldquo;We have no choice but to fight! I call on you to stand with me, today and in the coming weeks!&rdquo;
Simion had previously conceded defeat after the election results were certified, making his annulment attempt appear more symbolic than procedural.
This year&rsquo;s vote marked the culmination of a politically turbulent period in Romania. In a precedent-setting development earlier this year, the Constitutional Court had annulled the initial presidential contest, citing irregularities and credible accusations of Russian meddling, which Moscow has firmly denied. That decision triggered a fresh election cycle, culminating in Sunday&rsquo;s runoff.
With the court&rsquo;s dismissal of Simion&rsquo;s challenge, the path is now cleared for President-elect Dan to assume office, offering a clear mandate for his pro-European agenda. Dan&rsquo;s victory is widely seen as a reaffirmation of Romania&rsquo;s commitment to EU integration and liberal democratic values, in stark contrast to the nationalist and isolationist platform advanced by AUR.
Observers say the court's verdict not only closes the chapter on a contentious campaign but also signals a firm institutional stance against the politicisation of the electoral process.
