At least 10 people were killed after a small private aircraft crashed near Toluca airport in central Mexico while attempting an emergency landing, authorities confirmed on Tuesday. The incident took place in San Mateo Atenco, an industrial zone located around five kilometres from Toluca airport and approximately 50 kilometres west of Mexico City.
The aircraft had taken off from Acapulco, a coastal city on Mexico&rsquo;s Pacific shoreline, before encountering trouble mid-flight. According to state civil protection officials, the jet was carrying eight passengers along with two crew members. Several hours after the crash, rescue teams had recovered seven bodies from the site.
Preliminary information suggests the plane was attempting to land on a nearby soccer field when it struck the metal roof of an industrial facility, sparking a major fire. Emergency services rushed to the scene to control the blaze and secure the area.
Local authorities ordered the evacuation of nearly 130 people from surrounding buildings as a precautionary measure due to the intensity of the fire and potential safety risks. Firefighters and civil protection teams worked for hours to contain the flames and assess damage.
The exact cause of the crash remains unclear and is currently under investigation by aviation and safety authorities.
