Pakistan&rsquo;s Defence Minister Khawaja Asif has identified Kashmir, terrorism, and the Indus Waters Treaty as the core issues in relations with India, stating that these could form the basis of any prospective discussions between the two nations.
Asif made these remarks in response to a question regarding the way forward on unresolved matters with India, following an understanding reached between the two sides on Saturday to immediately cease all military actions across land, air, and sea.
This development came after four consecutive days of intense cross-border missile and drone strikes, which had brought India and Pakistan dangerously close to a full-scale conflict.
&ldquo;These are the three major issues that can be discussed,&rdquo; Asif said, according to a local news channel.&nbsp;
He further remarked, &ldquo;If the ceasefire helps pave the way towards peace, it would be a welcome development,&rdquo; while also noting that it is too early to make any definitive statements.
While Islamabad referred to the development as a ceasefire, New Delhi described it as an understanding.
Tensions escalated sharply after the Indian Armed Forces conducted strikes targeting nine terror launchpads located in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK), in retaliation for the recent terror attack in Pahalgam.
&ldquo;As time passes, opportunities for peace may emerge,&rdquo; the defence minister said. He added, &ldquo;We hope India, and particularly its leadership, will one day prioritise the region&rsquo;s future over party interests,&rdquo; stressing that peaceful coexistence on the basis of equality is crucial for the progress of South Asia.
Asif also expressed appreciation for the diplomatic backing extended by Pakistan&rsquo;s key allies and friendly nations, including China, Turkiye, Azerbaijan, and Gulf partners.
