Tensions between Pakistan and Afghanistan have flared once again following overnight clashes on Wednesday, marking the second major escalation in a week. The violent confrontation resulted in dozens of civilian and military casualties, forcing both sides to agree on a 48-hour temporary ceasefire.
On Thursday, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif said that &ldquo;the ball is in the Afghan Taliban&rsquo;s court&rdquo; to ensure a lasting truce. He urged Kabul to meet Islamabad&rsquo;s demands within 48 hours, emphasizing that no militant activity should originate from Afghan soil.
The ceasefire came after heavy shelling in the border region of Spin Boldak in Kandahar, where the UN Assistance Mission in Afghanistan reported at least 17 deaths and more than 300 injuries. Islamabad has repeatedly accused Kabul of sheltering fighters from Tehreek-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP), which it claims launches attacks on Pakistan from Afghan territory. Kabul has consistently denied these allegations.
Pakistani security forces confirmed no overnight exchange of fire since the ceasefire began, though additional paramilitary troops have been deployed as a precaution. Despite the truce, fresh gunfire was reported on Friday, with both countries accusing each other of initiating the assault.
Officials in Islamabad stated the ceasefire was requested by Kabul, while Afghan Taliban spokesperson Zabihullah Mujahid confirmed it was enforced at Pakistan&rsquo;s insistence.
