Bangladesh&rsquo;s interim government on Friday strongly condemned the lynching of a Hindu man in Mymensingh, declaring that there is &ldquo;no place for such violence in a New Bangladesh.&rdquo; The Muhammad Yunus&ndash;led administration said no one involved in the brutal killing would be spared. The victim, Dipu Chandra Das, was a young garment factory worker living as a tenant in the Dubalia Para area of Bhaluka Upazila.
According to police, the incident occurred around 9 pm on Thursday after a group of local residents accused Das of making derogatory remarks about Prophet Muhammad. He was allegedly beaten to death as tensions flared amid ongoing unrest in parts of the country. In a statement, the government said, &ldquo;We deeply condemn the beating and killing of a Hindu man in Mymensingh. There is no place for this kind of violence in New Bangladesh.&rdquo;
Chief Adviser Muhammad Yunus said Culture Adviser Mustafa Sarwar Faruquee had visited the site and that those responsible for the attack were being identified through CCTV footage. The work of bringing everyone under the law after reviewing CCTV camera footage is underway. Additionally, the security had been strengthened and damaged properties will be repaired with government support.
The lynching took place against the backdrop of widespread violence following the death of student leader Sharif Osman Hadi, whose killing triggered protests that quickly turned violent. Media houses, cultural institutions and public properties were attacked during the unrest. Expressing solidarity with journalists who were targeted, the interim government said, &ldquo;An attack on journalists is an attack on truth,&rdquo; and assured that justice would be delivered as the country heads toward elections in a tense and volatile atmosphere.
