Amid escalating unrest in Nepal, a group of pilgrims from Andhra Pradesh came under attack near Kathmandu on Thursday morning. Miscreants targeted their bus, smashed its windows with stones, and looted cash, mobile phones, and luggage. Several passengers sustained injuries in the incident.
The pilgrims, who had just completed their visit to the Pashupatinath Temple in Kathmandu, were heading back to India when the assault occurred. Nepalese army personnel later assisted the injured, and the Indian government arranged for the stranded pilgrims to be airlifted from Kathmandu to Delhi. By evening, the damaged bus reached the Sonauli border in Uttar Pradesh.
The surge in violence has prompted Indian authorities to place the border districts of Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, and West Bengal on high alert. Security forces are strictly monitoring cross-border movement, allowing only verified Nepalese citizens to cross. Attempts by Nepalese citizens to purchase essentials in Indian towns were blocked by police and turned back.
Meanwhile, Indian nationals stranded in Nepal are being transported back in coordination with the Indian embassy in Kathmandu. Supplies are also being sent across the border, with 36 trucks, including 19 petroleum tankers, entering Nepal from the Panitanki border in Darjeeling. Additional trucks carrying perishables and three ambulances were also cleared to cross.
The unrest has disrupted daily life in Nepal and strained essential supplies, as both governments work to maintain order and provide relief.
