Nepal is on the verge of swearing in a new interim administration after two days of violent unrest forced the collapse of Prime Minister K.P. Sharma Oli&rsquo;s government. The turmoil, led largely by Gen Z demonstrators, plunged the Himalayan nation into a constitutional crisis and prompted the Army to step in both to restore order and to mediate political negotiations.
According to senior officials, former Chief Justice Sushila Karki will be sworn in as the country&rsquo;s interim Prime Minister later this evening. President Ram Chandra Paudel is expected to administer the oath of office at around 9:00 pm.
Once in office, Karki is expected to immediately form a three-member Cabinet tasked with steering the country through the crisis. The interim government&rsquo;s first priority will be to recommend the dissolution of Parliament, a core demand of the protest movement that toppled the previous administration.
Reports&nbsp;indicate that the initial Cabinet meeting will be convened within hours of the swearing-in. Press advisor Kiran Pokhrel confirmed that the President is prepared to carry out the necessary constitutional procedures and formalise other pending decisions.
The Army&rsquo;s intervention came after back-to-back days of violence left parts of Kathmandu resembling a &ldquo;war zone,&rdquo; with nearly 20 people killed and hundreds injured. Security forces have since secured the capital, though sporadic protests continue in some pockets.
The crisis erupted after long-simmering frustrations over corruption, nepotism, and curbs on free expression boiled over, galvanising Nepal&rsquo;s younger generation into mass demonstrations. The military has emphasized that its involvement is temporary and aimed only at stabilising the situation until civilian authority is restored.
For now, all eyes remain on Karki, who is poised to become Nepal&rsquo;s first female interim Prime Minister at a moment of extraordinary upheaval.
