After the suspected shooter was identified as an Afghan national, President Donald Trump said that lax migration policies pose the “greatest national security threat” to the US. Calling the shooting an “act of terror” and a “heinous assault,” Trump said no nation can afford such risks. Following the incident, USCIS halted all immigration visa processing for Afghan nationals.
The Commander of the DC Joint Task Force has extended “thoughts and prayers” to the families of the two National Guard members injured in Wednesday’s shooting near the White House. Col. Larry Doane said the team stands with the Guardsmen as they head into Thanksgiving “with a burden no family should bear.”
USCIS has indefinitely paused all immigration requests involving Afghan nationals, citing a review of security and vetting protocols. The agency said protecting the homeland remains its top priority.
The accused has been identified as 29-year-old Rahmanullah Lakanwal, an Afghan national who entered the U.S. in 2021 through Operation Allies Welcome, a resettlement program launched after the U.S. withdrawal from Afghanistan.
Operation Allies Welcome was a Biden-era program that evacuated and resettled nearly 76,000 Afghans in the U.S. after the fall of Kabul, offering humanitarian protection and relocation support.
DC Police say investigators have found no additional suspects. Officials believe it was a lone gunman who ambushed the National Guard members near the White House.

Barack Obama denounced the shooting near the White House, saying violence has no place in America. He said he and Michelle are praying for the injured servicemembers and their families.
Washington Mayor Muriel Bowser described the attack as a targeted shooting. She said both injured National Guard members are hospitalised and in critical condition.
West Virginia Governor Patrick Morrisey withdrew his earlier claim that the injured Guardsmen had died, citing conflicting updates. Officials confirm both remain in critical condition.
The Trump administration has ordered an additional 500 National Guard members to Washington after the attack. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth confirmed the rapid deployment.
Troops nearby rushed to the scene after hearing gunfire and subdued the attacker after he was shot. Investigators say the suspect suddenly opened fire after turning a corner.
