The death toll from the powerful 7.7-magnitude earthquake that struck Myanmar and neighbouring countries on Friday has now reached 1,002, with 2,376 injured and 30 still missing, the nation&rsquo;s State Administration Council said on Saturday.
Rescue efforts continue as officials warn that the toll could rise further, especiallly since a second earthquake, with magnitude 4.2, hit later the same day.&nbsp;
The earthquakes caused widespread devastation, flattening buildings, damaging roads, and collapsing bridges. Tremors were felt across the region, including in Thailand, where a 33-storey building under construction in Bangkok collapsed, killing six people and leaving 47 unaccounted for. &nbsp;
As part of its Act East policy, India has emerged as a key first responder to the crisis. Under Operation Brahma, the Indian government swiftly dispatched over 15 tonnes of relief material to Myanmar. The first tranche of aid, sent aboard an Indian Air Force C-130J aircraft from Hindon Air Base, landed in Yangon on Saturday. &nbsp;
The relief consignment includes: &nbsp; Tents, blankets, and sleeping bags &nbsp; Ready-to-eat food packets and hygiene kits &nbsp; Water purifiers and solar lamps &nbsp; Generator sets for emergency power supply &nbsp; Essential medicines such as paracetamol, antibiotics, syringes, gloves, and bandages &nbsp;
The Indian Embassy in Yangon is closely monitoring the situation. Officials have confirmed that no Indian nationals in Myanmar have been reported injured so far. The Indian Embassy in Bangkok is also on alert, with an emergency helpline available for Indian citizens in Thailand. &nbsp; Myanmar&rsquo;s ongoing civil conflict has made relief efforts more difficult, restricting access to some of the worst-affected areas. However, international aid is arriving, with China sending a 37-member team equipped with earthquake detectors and drones, Russia dispatching 120 rescuers and supplies, and the United Nations allocating $5 million for emergency relief. &nbsp; In Bangkok, families of the missing construction workers gathered near the collapsed building site, awaiting updates. &ldquo;I was praying they had survived, but when I got here and saw the ruin&mdash;where could they be?&rdquo; said Naruemol Thonglek, whose partner and five friends remain trapped under the debris. &nbsp; Myanmar&rsquo;s military-led government has issued an urgent appeal for blood donations to aid the injured. While the country has historically been reluctant to accept foreign assistance, officials have indicated a willingness to receive international aid in response to this crisis. Myanmar leader Senior General Min Aung Hlaing has called for humanitarian assistance from both local and international communities. On Saturday morning, Min Aung Hlaing arrived in Mandalay to facilitate the rescue operations.&nbsp;
