Tragedy struck Mexico&rsquo;s northwestern state of Sonora on Saturday when a powerful explosion ripped through a supermarket in Hermosillo, killing at least 23 people and injuring 11 others. Several of the victims were children, officials confirmed.
The blast occurred inside a Waldo&rsquo;s store in the heart of the city. According to the Sonora prosecutor&rsquo;s office, preliminary investigations point to a malfunctioning electrical transformer as the likely cause of the explosion. Authorities have ruled out the possibility of an attack or any act of violence against civilians.
Governor Alfonso Durazo expressed deep sorrow over the incident, describing it as one of the state&rsquo;s darkest days. &ldquo;Among the victims are minors, and several survivors are receiving medical care at local hospitals,&rdquo; he said in a statement. Durazo assured residents that a full and transparent investigation was underway to determine exactly what went wrong and to hold anyone responsible to account.
&ldquo;Nobody will face this pain alone,&rdquo; the governor said, adding that emergency, security, and health services responded promptly and worked tirelessly to save lives and prevent further damage.
Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum also extended her condolences to the families of those who lost their lives. In a message shared on X, she said she had spoken with Governor Durazo to coordinate federal assistance. &ldquo;Support teams have been sent to provide aid to the injured and to the families of the victims,&rdquo; she added.
Images from the scene showed the store&rsquo;s facade severely burned, with shattered windows and debris scattered across the area. The explosion occurred around 2 p.m. local time, prompting nearby businesses to close as firefighters worked to contain the blaze.
The incident took place during Mexico&rsquo;s Day of the Dead celebrations, a period when families gather to honor departed loved ones making the tragedy even more heartbreaking for the community of Hermosillo.
