London witnessed one of the largest far-right gatherings in Britain&rsquo;s history on Saturday, with the &ldquo;Unite the Kingdom&rdquo; rally quickly spiraling into violent clashes. Organised by activist Tommy Robinson, the demonstration drew an estimated 110,000 to 150,000 participants, far exceeding organisers&rsquo; projections. Draped in Union Jack and St. George&rsquo;s flags, many attendees clashed with police while trying to approach a counter-protest of around 5,000 people organised by Stand Up to Racism.
Violence erupted as demonstrators attempted to breach police lines, leaving officers with broken bones, concussions, and other injuries. Police confirmed 25 arrests and condemned the attacks, with Interior Minister Shabana Mahmood warning that anyone engaging in criminal activity would face the full force of the law. Assistant Commissioner Matt Twist described the scenes as &ldquo;unacceptable violence.&rdquo;
The rally drew international attention after tech billionaire Elon Musk joined via video link, delivering a provocative speech that drew cheers from the crowd and immediate backlash from politicians and anti-racism groups. Musk told attendees that &ldquo;the left is the party of murder and celebrating murder&rdquo; and added: &ldquo;Whether you choose violence or not, violence is coming to you. You either fight back or you die.&rdquo; Critics described the intervention as deeply irresponsible, accusing him of stoking division and legitimising extremist rhetoric.
Robinson, whose real name is Stephen Yaxley-Lennon, framed the event as a &ldquo;free speech festival&rdquo; and dedicated it to late American right-wing activist Charlie Kirk. Many marchers carried placards displaying Kirk&rsquo;s image alongside anti-immigration slogans such as &ldquo;stop the boats.&rdquo; The rally comes amid rising anti-immigration sentiment in the UK, with Reform UK party leader Nigel Farage&rsquo;s support surging in polls and tensions escalating over asylum-seeker accommodation. Academics noted the event attracted multiple factions within the far-right, as well as newcomers, highlighting the growing breadth of mobilisation.
Veteran Labour MP Diane Abbott condemned the far-right rhetoric, saying Robinson and his allies were spreading &ldquo;dangerous lies&rdquo; about asylum seekers, while anti-racism organisations described the rally as likely the largest far-right demonstration ever held in Britain. As London&rsquo;s streets settled after hours of tension, the rally left behind a stark reminder of the volatile mix of politics, extremism, and public spectacle.
