A serious aviation incident was narrowly avoided at Denver International Airport when an American Airlines flight bound for Miami aborted takeoff due to a fire in its landing gear.
The aircraft, a Boeing 737 MAX 8 operating as Flight AA-3023, caught fire on the runway around 2:45 p.m. local time while preparing for departure. Smoke and flames were seen billowing from the plane's undercarriage, leading to a full emergency response.
All 173 passengers on board were safely evacuated using emergency slides. One person suffered a minor injury, and several others were evaluated by emergency personnel at the scene. Passengers were later transported back to the terminal via shuttle buses.
The airline confirmed that the fire was caused by a maintenance issue related to a tire in the landing gear system. The plane has since been removed from service for inspection.
This is the second runway fire incident at Denver Airport involving an American Airlines Boeing 737 in the past five months. A similar event occurred in March on a flight bound for Dallas.
The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has launched an investigation into the latest incident to determine the exact cause and ensure that future safety measures are implemented.
