In a development that has deepened public concern, police confirmed the arrest of a 50-year-old East Jerusalem resident on suspicion of attempted arson. The circumstances surrounding the blaze are now under criminal investigation, raising fears of deliberate ignition in a region already strained by political tension.
From the hillside near Modiin, residents like 40-year-old Yuval Aharoni watched helplessly as flames devoured dry brushland. &ldquo;We knew the weather would turn&mdash;it was all forecasted,&rdquo; he said, &ldquo;but there just weren&rsquo;t enough big planes or preparation. It&rsquo;s heartbreaking.&rdquo;
In response to urgent appeals, the National Security Council has coordinated international firefighting support, securing three Canadair waterbombers from Italy and Croatia. Talks are ongoing with Greece and Cyprus for further assistance, highlighting the growing regional dimension of the emergency.
As day breaks again over a scorched landscape, the full scope of the disaster remains unclear.
