External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar met U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio in New York on the sidelines of the 80th United Nations General Assembly, aiming to strengthen bilateral relations after tensions over U.S. tariffs on Indian goods and increased H-1B visa fees.
The talks covered trade, energy, pharmaceuticals, critical minerals, and broader international issues. Both sides emphasised the importance of continued engagement to advance priority areas, including cooperation on a free and open Indo-Pacific and Quad initiatives.
India and the U.S. are preparing for the next round of trade negotiations, following a recent phone call between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and President Donald Trump that revived discussions paused in August. Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal is also in the U.S. to support trade talks.
This marks Jaishankar&rsquo;s fifth official visit to the U.S. in nine months, with Washington expected to host him next. The meeting also addressed the upcoming Quad summit, although the date for the Delhi gathering of Quad leaders, including Trump, remains unannounced.
