Somaliland has functioned as a de facto state since 1991, with its own government, elections, currency and security forces. Yet it remained unrecognised for over three decades, largely due to fears that acknowledging its independence would encourage fragmentation across Africa. Israel&rsquo;s move breaks that long-held consensus.
The timing is not accidental. Somaliland sits near the Bab al-Mandeb Strait, a critical maritime chokepoint through which global trade and energy supplies pass. Control, access or influence in this corridor has become increasingly valuable amid conflicts in Gaza, Yemen and the broader Middle East. By recognising Somaliland, Israel signals an intent to expand its strategic footprint beyond the Mediterranean and into the Horn of Africa.

But alignment with Israel also places Somaliland firmly inside a polarised regional equation. Somalia, which considers Somaliland an integral part of its territory, has condemned the move as a violation of its sovereignty. Many African and Arab states fear the precedent it sets and worry it could destabilise already fragile borders.
There are also concerns among Somalilanders themselves. While recognition promises visibility and leverage, it may also draw the region into conflicts far beyond its borders. The fear is that Somaliland could become a pawn in larger geopolitical games, vulnerable to retaliation, diplomatic isolation or security threats.
The move underscores a broader shift in international politics, where strategic interests increasingly override traditional caution around separatist regions. Recognition is no longer just a legal or moral question. It is a tool of power projection.
