Iran will host what it has called a &ldquo;historic&rdquo; funeral in Tehran on Saturday to honour 60 individuals, including senior military commanders and prominent nuclear scientists, who were killed during the recent 12-day conflict with Israel.
The ceremony is scheduled to begin at 8:00 a.m. local time at Enghelab (Revolution) Square in the capital. A large funeral procession will then move toward Azadi Square, about 11 kilometres away, where additional rites will take place.
Among the deceased is General Mohammad Bagheri, a top commander in Iran&rsquo;s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) and the country&rsquo;s second-highest-ranking military officer after Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. Bagheri will be buried alongside his wife and daughter.
Also being laid to rest is nuclear physicist Mohammad Mehdi Tehranchi, who will be interred with his wife. According to reports, four women and four children are also among those commemorated, highlighting the broader human toll of the conflict.
The hostilities began on June 13 when Israel launched a wave of strikes, saying the action was aimed at curbing Iran&rsquo;s alleged pursuit of nuclear weapons. The attacks targeted key facilities and leadership figures across Iran.
Among the over 30 high-ranking IRGC commanders reported killed were Commander-in-Chief Hossein Salami and Aerospace Force head Amirali Hajizadeh. Iran&rsquo;s health ministry has confirmed at least 627 deaths and nearly 4,900 injuries as a result of the conflict.
The funeral is expected to draw tens of thousands of mourners and will be attended by Iran&rsquo;s political, military, and religious elite. State media have called it one of the most significant public mourning events in recent history.
