In a sharp escalation of nuclear tensions, the Iranian Parliament has approved a bill to suspend cooperation with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) following recent U.S. airstrikes on Iranian nuclear facilities.
According to semi-official Mehr News Agency, the bill passed overwhelmingly during an open session of Parliament, with 221 of 223 lawmakers voting in favour. The decision is a direct response to "Operation Midnight Hammer", the U.S. offensive that targeted Esfahan, Fordow, and Natanz nuclear sites.
Iran defended the move as a matter of sovereignty and national interest. The Atomic Energy Organisation of Iran (AEOI) condemned the attacks as violations of the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) and asserted that Iran&rsquo;s peaceful nuclear programme will continue unhindered.
Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf criticised the IAEA for failing to condemn the attacks, stating that the agency has "lost its international credibility." He announced that Iran will cease cooperation with the IAEA until guarantees are provided regarding the safety of its nuclear facilities.
The decision comes amid heightened global concern. The IAEA Board of Governors recently passed a resolution declaring Iran non-compliant with nuclear obligations for the first time since 2005, citing inadequate explanations for nuclear traces at three undeclared sites.
