Iran remained under a severe communication blockade on Friday as nationwide anti-government protests continued to intensify, a day after large-scale demonstrations erupted following a rallying call by exiled crown prince Reza Pahlavi. Rights groups and activists say the death toll has continued to rise as authorities tighten control across the country.
At least 62 people have been killed since the protests began in late December. The death toll is over 65, and more than 2,311 people have been detained so far. Protests have spread to at least 512 locations across 180 cities in all 31 provinces, underlining the scale of the unrest.
The demonstrations began on December 28, 2025, with market shutdowns in Tehran over rising inflation and the sharply falling value of the rial. What started as an economic protest has since evolved into a nationwide movement against Iran&rsquo;s clerical leadership led by Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.
Iran&rsquo;s state media on Friday accused foreign elements linked to the United States and Israel of fuelling violence. Breaking its silence on casualties, official media acknowledged that deaths had occurred but did not provide figures.
The situation prompted authorities to maintain restrictions on internet services, severely limiting communication across the country. Iran&rsquo;s communications ministry said the decision to curb internet access was taken by security agencies due to prevailing conditions. The unrest also disrupted air travel, with multiple flights between Iran and Dubai cancelled, along with several services operated by Turkish Airlines.
Addressing supporters in Tehran, Supreme Leader Khamenei issued a strong warning to protesters and criticised US President Donald Trump, accusing him of interference and signalling that security forces would take firm action. Iran&rsquo;s judiciary chief, Gholamhossein Mohseni-Ejei, separately warned that punishments for those involved in the protests would be severe and uncompromising.
Meanwhile, Reza Pahlavi urged international attention to the unfolding crisis, calling on the United States to take urgent action to support protesters. His appeals on social media have played a key role in mobilising large crowds, with demonstrators chanting slogans both against Iran&rsquo;s leadership and in favour of Pahlavi&rsquo;s return.
As protests continue despite crackdowns, Iran faces growing domestic unrest and increasing international scrutiny.
