Iran is witnessing a sharp escalation in nationwide protests as anger over the collapsing economy and the falling value of the rial continues to grow. What began on December 28 with a shutdown of Tehran&rsquo;s Grand Bazaar has now evolved into a widespread movement challenging the country&rsquo;s clerical leadership.
The past two weeks have seen some of the largest anti-government demonstrations in recent years. At least 42 people have been killed between December 28, 2025, and January 8, 2026. The deaths reportedly include 29 civilian protesters, eight members of the security forces, and five minors.&nbsp;
Large-scale rallies were reported in Tehran, where thousands of people filled major roads, including Ayatollah Kashani Boulevard in the northwest of the capital. Demonstrations were also reported from cities such as Abadan and Mashhad, with unverified social media posts suggesting clashes with security forces and damage to government property.
Protests have spread to at least 46 cities across 21 provinces. Market shutdowns were reported in several Kurdish regions, including Kurdistan, West Azerbaijan, Kermanshah and Ilam, indicating growing coordination and civil resistance.
The crackdown has intensified alongside the protests. More than 2,277 people have reportedly been arrested nationwide since December 28, including at least 166 minors and 48 university students. The agency also alleged that dozens of forced confessions have been aired on state television.
Digital restrictions have further deepened the crisis. Internet monitoring groups reported a near-total nationwide internet blackout, severely limiting communication during the unrest. Exiled opposition figures have condemned the shutdown, calling on international leaders to increase pressure on Tehran.
The situation has also drawn sharp reactions from the United States. President Donald Trump issued a warning to Iranian authorities, cautioning against further violence and signalling possible strong action if the death toll continues to rise.
