Iran on Monday announced the execution of a man accused of spying for Israel, marking the latest in what observers describe as the country&rsquo;s largest wave of executions in decades.
Authorities identified the man as Bahman Choobiasl, who was accused of working on sensitive telecommunications projects and allegedly passing information about electronic imports and supply routes to Israel&rsquo;s intelligence agency, Mossad.
The execution comes at a tense moment for Tehran, just days after the United Nations reinstated sanctions over its nuclear program. Iranian officials had vowed to retaliate against what they called &ldquo;enemies of the state.&rdquo;
Since its June conflict with Israel, Iran has executed at least nine people on espionage charges. That war, which left over 1,100 dead including senior Iranian commanders, triggered missile exchanges between Tehran and Tel Aviv. Earlier this month, Iran hanged Babak Shahbazi, also accused of spying for Israel. Activists alleged he was tortured into a false confession.
Human rights groups say Iran has escalated its use of capital punishment to levels unseen since the mass executions of 1988, at the close of the Iran-Iraq war. They estimate over 1,000 people have been executed in 2025 alone, noting that the true figure may be even higher since many cases are not publicly reported.
Meanwhile, domestic unrest continues to simmer, fueled by economic struggles, demands for women&rsquo;s rights, and growing calls for political reform. The wave of executions has been widely seen as Tehran&rsquo;s attempt to assert control both at home and abroad.
