Iran on Sunday announced that it has designated the armed forces of European countries as terrorist groups, escalating tensions with the European Union after the bloc classified the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) as a terrorist organisation.
The announcement was made by Iran&rsquo;s parliament speaker during a legislative session marked by strong symbolism. Lawmakers wore green uniforms associated with the IRGC and staged a show of solidarity, condemning Europe&rsquo;s decision. The move was justified under a domestic law passed in 2019 that allows Iran to respond to foreign designations against the Guards.
Iranian leaders criticised the European Union&rsquo;s action as irresponsible and politically motivated, accusing the bloc of acting under pressure from the United States and Israel. They claimed the decision would further marginalise Europe&rsquo;s global influence while strengthening domestic support for the IRGC.
The declaration comes amid heightened geopolitical tensions following the EU&rsquo;s move to label the IRGC a terrorist organisation over its role in suppressing protests in Iran. Western governments have accused the Guards of orchestrating violent crackdowns that resulted in thousands of deaths, allegations Tehran has rejected, blaming unrest on foreign-backed militant activities.
The parliamentary session coincided with the anniversary of the return of Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini from exile, a pivotal moment in the 1979 Islamic Revolution. The IRGC remains a powerful ideological and military force within Iran, tasked with defending the foundations of the Islamic republic.
The standoff unfolds as Iran and the United States continue to exchange warnings over potential military action, even as both sides signal openness to dialogue. Washington has reinforced its military presence in the region, while Iranian officials have indicated willingness to engage in talks under specific conditions.
Regional diplomatic efforts are also underway to reduce tensions. Iran has held discussions with regional leaders, including Qatar and Egypt, as concerns grow over the risk of escalation.
