Indonesia, Southeast Asia's largest economy and the world's fourth-most populous nation, has officially joined BRICS, the association of major emerging economies, according to an announcement by Brazil's foreign ministry on Monday. This milestone marks a significant step in reshaping global economic and geopolitical alliances.

As the 2024 BRICS president, Brazil emphasized Indonesia's strategic importance to the Global South. With a GDP of approximately $1.4 trillion, a population exceeding 280 million, and consistent annual economic growth above 5% over the past decade, Indonesia is one of the most dynamic emerging markets globally.

"Indonesia shares with other BRICS members support for reforming global governance institutions and contributes positively to deepening cooperation in the Global South, priority issues for Brazil's presidency," the statement read.

Indonesia becomes the first nation to gain full membership since BRICS opened its doors to expansion at the 2023 Johannesburg Summit. The original BRICS members&mdash;Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa&mdash;unanimously approved Indonesia's entry under the guiding principles agreed upon in Johannesburg.

The delay in Indonesia's accession was primarily due to the country's 2024 general elections. However, with President Prabowo Subianto's government assuming office in October, the membership process was swiftly finalized.

China welcomed Indonesia's inclusion, highlighting its role as a major player in the Global South. "Indonesia's accession aligns with the shared vision of BRICS nations and will significantly contribute to the group's collective development goals," said China's foreign ministry.

Geopolitically, Indonesia's membership bolsters BRICS' influence in Southeast Asia, a region pivotal to global trade and security. It also signifies a shift towards multipolarity in global governance, offering an alternative to Western-led economic structures.
