India has called on Pakistan to urgently release and repatriate Indian fishermen and civilian prisoners still lodged in Pakistani jails, even as New Delhi completed the release of 67 Pakistanis this week.
&ldquo;Yesterday India released and repatriated 48 Pakistani fishermen and 19 civilian prisoners. Now, 33 Pakistani fishermen are in Indian custody. Pakistan must reciprocate by releasing Indian fishermen and civilian prisoners,&rdquo; officials noted.
As of today, 193 Indian fishermen remain in Pakistan&rsquo;s Malir jail in Karachi, including 18 from Maharashtra&rsquo;s Palghar district.
&ldquo;Over 170 fishermen have completed their sentences and their nationality is also verified. Pakistan should release them urgently. As most of them are from Gujarat, I appeal Pakistan to send them back home before Navratri festival begins. Their families are desperately waiting for them,&rdquo; the statement added.
India has repeatedly stressed the humanitarian nature of the issue and urged Islamabad to act swiftly in the spirit of reciprocity and compassion.
