India on Friday strongly criticised Pakistan following allegations of clandestine nuclear tests, saying such activities were consistent with Islamabad&rsquo;s long history of illegal nuclear operations.
Ministry of External Affairs spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said Pakistan&rsquo;s nuclear record was marked by decades of smuggling, export control violations, secret partnerships and the AQ Khan network. His remarks came in response to questions about former US President Donald Trump&rsquo;s recent statement alleging that Pakistan was secretly conducting nuclear tests.
&ldquo;Clandestine and illegal nuclear activities are in keeping with Pakistan&rsquo;s history, which is centered around decades of smuggling, export control violations, secret partnerships, the AQ Khan network and further proliferation,&rdquo; Jaiswal said during the weekly briefing.
He added that India has repeatedly drawn the attention of the international community to Pakistan&rsquo;s opaque and dangerous approach to nuclear development. &ldquo;In this backdrop, we have taken note of President Trump&rsquo;s comment about Pakistan&rsquo;s nuclear testing,&rdquo; he said.
In an interview with CBS News&rsquo;s 60 Minutes last Sunday, Trump alleged that Pakistan had been carrying out underground nuclear tests in secrecy. He said, &ldquo;We&rsquo;re going to test because they test. And certainly North Korea&rsquo;s been testing. Pakistan&rsquo;s been testing. They don&rsquo;t tell you about it. They do it way underground, where people don&rsquo;t know what&rsquo;s happening. You just feel a little vibration.&rdquo;
The former president also claimed that countries such as Russia and China were conducting similar secret nuclear tests, avoiding public disclosure.
Pakistan dismissed Trump&rsquo;s claims, calling them baseless. Its foreign office said the country was not the first to conduct nuclear tests and would not be the first to resume them.
India, however, maintained that Pakistan&rsquo;s record of secret proliferation networks supported long-standing global concerns about its nuclear transparency. New Delhi reiterated that the international community must take note of Pakistan&rsquo;s nuclear conduct, which continues to pose a risk to regional and global stability.
