India has advised its citizens in Thailand to stay alert and check official updates before travelling to areas near the Thailand&ndash;Cambodia border, where armed clashes and rising tension have triggered safety concerns.
The Indian Embassy in Bangkok said travellers should monitor announcements from Thai authorities, as movement restrictions have been put in place in select border districts. Travel within the rest of Thailand remains unaffected, and major tourist cities including Bangkok, Chiang Mai, Phuket, Samui, Krabi, Pattaya and Ayutthaya continue to operate normally.
Transport disruptions have been reported in some regions. Rail services to Ban Khlong Luek have been suspended, and buses headed to Kantharalak are being diverted. Travellers have also been advised to avoid Route 348 in Buri Ram.
The tensions have drawn international alarm, particularly from UNESCO, which expressed deep concern about renewed violence near the Preah Vihear Temple, a World Heritage site. UNESCO urged both countries to protect cultural heritage and said it stands ready to provide assistance once conditions allow.
The current escalation reportedly began on December 10 with artillery and rocket fire impacting civilian areas. Each side has accused the other of initiating the attacks. Cambodia has said that Thai aircraft struck multiple provinces, damaging homes, schools, roads, pagodas and ancient temples. Thai forces have accused Cambodia of similar cross-border aggression.
This flare-up follows a series of confrontations earlier in 2025, including a landmine blast in May that killed a Cambodian soldier and injured Thai troops, and later cross-border shelling that left at least nine civilians dead. A temporary truce was reached mid-year with the help of international mediators, but the fragile calm appears to have collapsed.
Leaders from the United States and Malaysia have begun outreach to both governments in hopes of preventing further violence. Both countries have been locked in a century-long dispute over overlapping border territory dating back to colonial-era maps produced in 1907. Although the International Court of Justice ruled in 1962 that the Preah Vihear Temple belongs to Cambodia, military clashes have erupted repeatedly, most recently after the site was granted World Heritage status in 2008.
As the situation remains fluid, Indian travellers are urged to stay cautious, avoid border areas and follow official guidance for their safety.
