Disturbing details have surfaced following a brutal attack on a Hindu businessman in Bangladesh&rsquo;s Damudya area, where assailants allegedly hacked him and set him on fire. The victim, identified as 50-year-old Khokon Chandra Das, is currently undergoing treatment in Dhaka after sustaining critical injuries.
Khokon Chandra Das runs a medicine shop and mobile banking service at Keurbhanga Bazar. The attack reportedly occurred late Wednesday evening near the market area in Kaneshwar Union of Damudya. According to police and family members, Das was returning home after closing his shop and carrying the day&rsquo;s earnings when he was intercepted by miscreants.
His wife, Seema Das, alleged that the attackers assaulted him with sharp weapons and then poured petrol on his head and face before setting him ablaze. She stated that the attackers tried to kill him after he recognised two of them during the assault. The family has denied having any prior disputes or enmity in the area.
Police officials said the attackers stopped Das&rsquo;s autorickshaw near Keurbhanga Bazar on the Damudya&ndash;Shariatpur road before launching the attack. Severely injured and on fire, Das reportedly jumped into a nearby pond in an attempt to save himself. The assailants fled after locals raised an alarm.
Residents rescued him and rushed him to Shariatpur Sadar Hospital, from where he was referred to Dhaka due to the seriousness of his condition. Damudya police confirmed that two suspects, identified as Rabbi and Sohag, have been named in the case, and investigations are ongoing.
The incident has raised fresh concerns over the safety of religious minorities in Bangladesh. It comes weeks after a Hindu man was lynched and set on fire in Mymensingh over alleged blasphemy, followed by another lynching of a Hindu man in Rajbari district over an alleged extortion dispute.
