A helicopter crash on Mount Kilimanjaro in Tanzania has claimed the lives of five people, officials confirmed on Wednesday, marking a rare but deadly incident on Africa&rsquo;s tallest mountain.
The helicopter was on a medical evacuation mission when it crashed between Barafu Camp and the Kibo summit at an altitude of over 4,000 metres. The aircraft was heading to assist climbers who required urgent medical attention when it went down in the high-altitude zone.
All five people on board were killed in the crash. The victims included two foreign climbers, a local doctor, a tour guide and the pilot. Rescue teams later recovered the bodies from the crash site, which is known for extreme weather conditions and thin air.
Authorities said the helicopter was operated by a company that provides emergency rescue and evacuation services on the mountain, where climbers frequently face altitude sickness and other health risks.
An investigation has been launched to determine the cause of the crash. Officials have said that flying conditions around Kilimanjaro can be challenging due to sudden weather changes, strong winds and reduced visibility.
Helicopter accidents on Mount Kilimanjaro are uncommon, but the terrain and altitude make rescue operations especially difficult. The incident has once again highlighted the risks involved in high-altitude aviation and emergency missions on the iconic peak.
