London Heathrow Airport, one of the world&rsquo;s busiest aviation hubs, has resumed flight operations nearly 18 hours after an electrical substation fire triggered a massive power outage, grounding hundreds of flights and disrupting travel plans for thousands of passengers.
The first aircraft to land at Heathrow post-shutdown was a British Airways flight, touching down just before sunset on Friday. The airport had been forced to suspend all operations after the unexpected power failure, which plunged terminals into chaos, leading to widespread cancellations and delays.
Major Disruption to Global Air Travel
Flight tracking service FlightRadar24 reported that at least 1,350 flights to and from Heathrow were affected, impacting airlines across the globe. Air India, India&rsquo;s largest carrier, confirmed that its operations to and from London Heathrow had been disrupted. What Caused the Outage?
Authorities have yet to determine the exact cause of the fire that erupted at an electrical substation near Heathrow, though officials have stated there is no evidence of foul play. Eyewitnesses in West London described hearing a loud explosion followed by a fireball and plumes of thick smoke billowing into the sky.
The substation fire knocked out power to critical airport infrastructure, including lighting, air traffic control systems, and baggage handling, forcing the immediate suspension of operations. Heathrow&rsquo;s CEO, Thomas Woldbye, defended the decision to shut down the airport, citing safety concerns.
&ldquo;We would not shut down the airport unless we had severe safety concerns,&rdquo; Woldbye stated. &ldquo;Heathrow&rsquo;s power grid is supported by three substations, and while two remained functional, the damage required extensive restructuring of the electricity supply before normal operations could resume.&rdquo;
Airlines Struggle to Reposition Aircraft and Crews
With 230,000 passengers passing through Heathrow daily&mdash;amounting to over 83 million annually&mdash;the airport&rsquo;s closure sent ripple effects throughout the global aviation network. Airlines now face significant logistical challenges in repositioning aircraft and crew to accommodate rescheduled flights.
British Airways, Heathrow&rsquo;s largest operator, worked swiftly to restore its services, while Emirates confirmed it would resume flights starting with EK07 (Dubai-London Heathrow) on March 22. Passengers at Heathrow described chaotic scenes, with long queues, stranded travellers sleeping in terminals, and confusion over rebooking options. Many travellers, particularly those with connecting flights, faced significant delays in reaching their final destinations.
The airport has since issued an apology for the inconvenience caused by the daylong closure. &ldquo;We understand the frustration and disruption this has caused, and we sincerely regret the impact on travellers,&rdquo; Heathrow officials said in a statement.

This incident has raised concerns over Heathrow&rsquo;s emergency preparedness and infrastructure resilience. Critics argue that the airport should have stronger contingency plans in place to handle power failures without necessitating a full shutdown. However, Woldbye defended Heathrow&rsquo;s crisis response, calling the situation &ldquo;unprecedented.&rdquo;
&ldquo;There are certain contingencies we cannot guard against 100%, and this was one of them,&rdquo; he stated. &ldquo;All our procedures worked as they should, given the circumstances.&rdquo;
As Heathrow restores normal operations, aviation analysts suggest that airports worldwide should reassess their infrastructure safeguards to prevent similar disruptions in the future. With the global airline industry still recovering from pandemic-era turbulence, ensuring seamless airport operations remains a top priority for the aviation sector.
