Denmark&rsquo;s Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen has warned that her country is facing a defining moment over the future of Greenland, following renewed threats by US President Donald Trump to take control of the strategically vital Arctic island.
Speaking ahead of high level discussions in Washington on global competition for critical raw materials, Frederiksen said the dispute over Greenland had moved beyond rhetoric. She described the situation as a conflict with implications far wider than the island itself, touching on international law, sovereignty and global stability.
In public remarks and a social media statement, Frederiksen said Denmark was prepared to defend its principles wherever required, including in the Arctic. She stressed that Copenhagen stands firmly behind international law and the right of people to determine their own future.
Trump recently reignited controversy by claiming the United States would take action on Greenland regardless of opposition, arguing that control of the mineral rich territory is essential for US national security amid rising Russian and Chinese activity in the Arctic.
Denmark has received strong backing from European partners. Germany and Sweden publicly rejected Washington&rsquo;s language, with Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson condemning what he called threatening rhetoric from the US leadership.
Kristersson warned that any attempt to seize Greenland would violate international law and could set a dangerous precedent globally. He said Nordic and Baltic countries, along with several major European states, were united in support of Denmark.
Concerns over Arctic security have also triggered broader discussions within NATO. European defence officials have openly debated the need for a stronger alliance presence in the region, citing increasing geopolitical competition and the risk of escalation.
Greenland, which was a Danish colony until the mid 20th century, gained home rule decades ago and now governs most of its internal affairs. While discussions about eventual independence continue, public opinion on the island strongly rejects any form of US takeover.
As global powers intensify their focus on the Arctic&rsquo;s resources and strategic routes, Denmark&rsquo;s leadership has made clear that Greenland&rsquo;s future will not be decided through pressure or force, but through law, diplomacy and the will of its people.
