Ghana is mourning a national tragedy after a military helicopter crash in the Ashanti Region killed eight people, including two senior cabinet ministers.
Minister of Defence Edward Kofi Omane Boamah and Minister of Environment, Science, Technology, and Innovation Murtala Muhammed were among the deceased, Chief of Staff Julius Debrah confirmed in a press briefing.
&ldquo;I have the unpleasant duty to announce a national tragedy involving the crash of a military helicopter this morning near the Adansi area,&rdquo; Debrah said.
The crash also claimed the lives of Acting Deputy National Security Coordinator Muniru Mohammed Limuna, National Vice Chairman of the ruling National Democratic Congress Samuel Sarpong, and former parliamentary candidate Samuel Aboagye.
Three military crew members, Peter Bafemi Anala, Manin Twum-Ampadu, and Ernest Addo Mensah, were also killed in the incident.
President Nana Akufo-Addo expressed deep sorrow and ordered all national flags to be flown at half-mast until further notice.
United Nations agencies in Ghana also extended condolences. UN Resident Coordinator Zia Choudhury said the international community stands in solidarity with Ghana during this painful time.
&ldquo;The UN family in Ghana mourns with the nation in this moment of deep grief,&rdquo; he said.
Authorities have launched an investigation to determine the cause of the tragic crash.
