Anas Al Sharif, a 28-year-old Al Jazeera journalist, was among four reporters and an assistant killed in a strike near Shifa Hospital in eastern Gaza City on Sunday. Moments after his death, his X (formerly Twitter) account published a moving farewell message he had prepared in case of his death.
&ldquo;If these words reach you, know that Israel has succeeded in killing me and silencing my voice,&rdquo; the message began. In it, Al Sharif spoke of his lifelong dedication to telling the truth about Gaza&rsquo;s suffering, his love for his family, and his unwavering hope for Palestinian liberation. He urged the world not to forget Gaza and called on supporters to protect its people, especially its children.
Israel&rsquo;s military accused him of being a Hamas cell leader involved in rocket attacks, citing intelligence and documents allegedly found in Gaza. Human rights advocates disputed this, saying he was targeted for frontline reporting and that evidence was lacking.
Al Sharif&rsquo;s post also included emotional tributes to his wife, children, and mother, entrusting them to the care of the public. &ldquo;If I die, I die steadfast upon my principles&hellip; Do not forget Gaza,&rdquo; he wrote.
Al Jazeera condemned the attack as &ldquo;a desperate attempt to silence voices ahead of the occupation of Gaza,&rdquo; calling Al Sharif &ldquo;one of Gaza&rsquo;s bravest journalists.&rdquo; The other journalists killed were identified as Mohammed Qreiqeh, Ibrahim Zaher, and Mohammed Noufal.
