Hours after Israel and Hamas agreed to a ceasefire under Donald Trump&rsquo;s 20-point Gaza peace plan, several airstrikes hit northern Gaza, the civil defence agency reported on Thursday. Mohammed Al-Mughayyir, a senior Gaza official, said &ldquo;a series of intense airstrikes&rdquo; struck parts of Gaza City following the announcement.
The renewed strikes came despite confirmation from both sides of an initial ceasefire framework reached during indirect negotiations in Cairo. US President Trump had announced the deal late Wednesday, stating, &ldquo;Israel and Hamas have both signed off on the first phase of our Peace Plan.&rdquo;
However, Trump&rsquo;s declaration provided limited details, raising doubts about whether the agreement will be upheld. The announcement coincided with the second anniversary of Hamas&rsquo;s October 7, 2023, attack, which triggered Israel&rsquo;s retaliatory offensive that has since killed over 67,000 Palestinians, most of them women and children.
In the first phase of the deal, Hamas is expected to release 48 Israeli hostages, while Israel will free hundreds of Palestinian prisoners and detainees. Humanitarian aid will also be allowed into the famine-stricken Gaza Strip, and all military operations are to be suspended once implementation begins.
Despite the fresh violence, the possibility of peace sparked celebrations across Gaza, Israel, and neighbouring regions. Families of Israeli hostages lit fireworks, while Palestinians in Khan Younis and Gaza City rejoiced. &ldquo;Thank God for the ceasefire, the end of bloodshed and killing,&rdquo; said Gaza resident Abdul Majeed Abd Rabbo, expressing hope for lasting peace.
If successfully implemented, Trump&rsquo;s Gaza plan could mark the most significant step toward ending the war and serve as a major foreign policy victory for his administration.
