Under this rule of engagement, Danish forces must open fire and resist any armed attack on Greenland, which is an autonomous territory under Danish sovereignty, as soon as hostile actions are detected. The policy was originally adopted following Denmark&rsquo;s experience in World War II to ensure rapid defence in cases of surprise attacks and has been confirmed to still be in force.
The renewed focus on the rule comes amid increasing rhetoric from the US administration about Greenland&rsquo;s strategic importance and the possibility of the United States seeking greater control or influence over the Arctic island. Denmark and Greenland have consistently opposed any suggestion of transfer of sovereignty or military takeover, emphasising that Greenland is not for sale.
