A rare and shocking armed attack unfolded in Tehran on Saturday, targeting three judges of Iran's Supreme Court. The incident left two judges dead and another injured in what local media described as one of the gravest breaches of security at the Judiciary.
The victims, Hojatoleslam Ali Razini, head of Branch 39, and Judge Mohammad Moghiseh, head of Branch 53 of the Supreme Court, were renowned for their tough stance against crimes related to national security, espionage, and terrorism. The third judge, whose identity remains undisclosed, is receiving medical treatment.
The assailant, identified by the defense agency as a Judiciary staff member responsible for refreshments, reportedly used a handgun in the attack before committing suicide. However, the Judiciary Media Center offered a conflicting account, referring to the shooter as an "intruder."
The Media Center described the act as a premeditated terrorist assassination targeting two &ldquo;brave and revolutionary&rdquo; judges. Preliminary investigations suggest the assailant had no direct ties to the Supreme Court, as he was neither a litigant nor a visitor to its branches.
Following the attack, heightened security measures were implemented at Tehran&rsquo;s Courthouse, also known as the Palace of Justice. Several courthouse staff members were reportedly arrested under the prosecutor&rsquo;s orders.
The incident has prompted widespread speculation about its motives, especially given recent Judiciary crackdowns on espionage and agents linked to foreign entities. Notably, Hojatoleslam Ali Razini had survived a prior assassination attempt in January 1999.
