China's Jinzhouwan Airport is set to redefine the aviation landscape with an ambitious $4.3 billion project, aiming to establish the world&rsquo;s largest artificial island airport and a world-class regional air transport hub by 2035. Strategically located, the airport will leverage its "superior geographic position" to enhance regional connectivity and accommodate the growing demands of air travel and cargo transportation.&nbsp;
Upon completion, the state-of-the-art terminal buildings will boast an initial capacity of 43 million passengers annually, more than doubling the capacity of the existing Dalian Zhoushuizi Airport. Designed for scalability, the new facility will eventually handle 80 million passengers and one million tonnes of cargo per year, as per Airports Council International (ACI), a global industry body with members in China.&nbsp;
Progress on the project is well underway. By August, foundational work on a 77,000 square meter reclamation area was completed, with plans for further land reclamation and terminal foundation construction in the pipeline.&nbsp;
The decision to replace the aging Dalian Zhoushuizi Airport comes as the century-old facility&mdash;initially built during Japanese occupation&mdash;struggles to meet current demands. Last year, the airport handled over 658,000 international passengers despite reaching its designed capacity after several expansions. However, the site&rsquo;s location in a valley surrounded by mountains presents navigation challenges, particularly during adverse weather, raising safety concerns for pilots.&nbsp;
Jinzhouwan Airport addresses these issues with modern engineering and strategic planning. As the largest artificial island airport, it offers enhanced safety and reliability compared to island airports reliant on single-bridge connections, which are vulnerable to natural disasters or accidents.&nbsp;
The project is part of a broader infrastructure push in China, where 22 new airports worth a combined $19.6 billion are currently under construction, according to the CAPA-Centre for Aviation. By focusing on safety, scalability, and regional connectivity, Jinzhouwan Airport underscores China's commitment to modernizing its aviation infrastructure to meet future demands and support economic growth.&nbsp;
