China has strongly rejected U.S. President Donald Trump&rsquo;s recent call for 50-100% tariffs over Beijing&rsquo;s oil purchases from Russia, warning that sanctions and confrontation would only escalate global tensions. Speaking in Ljubljana, Slovenia, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi emphasised that wars cannot solve problems and that China does not participate in, nor plans, any military conflict.
&ldquo;What China does is encourage peace talks and promote political settlement of hotspot issues through dialogue,&rdquo; Wang said, highlighting Beijing&rsquo;s commitment to stability and multilateralism. He stressed that China has &ldquo;the best record on peace and security issues&rdquo; and called for Europe and China to be partners rather than rivals. &ldquo;Making the right choices amid the greatest changes in a century demonstrates the responsibilities that both sides should fulfil towards history and the people,&rdquo; he added.
Wang&rsquo;s remarks came after a meeting with Slovenia&rsquo;s Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Tanja Fajon, amid heightened scrutiny of global energy trade. The comments follow Trump&rsquo;s statement that NATO members&rsquo; purchase of Russian oil undermines collective bargaining power over Moscow, prompting his call for punitive tariffs on China similar to those imposed recently on India.
While Trump singles out China for potential tariffs, he has not targeted other nations such as Turkey, Hungary, or Slovakia, despite their energy purchases from Russia. Analysts say the dispute underscores the delicate balance between trade, diplomacy, and energy security as global tensions over Ukraine persist.
