Tensions flared once again in the South China Sea after Chinese and Philippine vessels collided near the disputed Scarborough Shoal, with both sides trading accusations over the encounter that left one Filipino crew member injured.
China&rsquo;s coast guard said a Philippine ship had &ldquo;deliberately rammed&rdquo; one of its vessels as more than 10 Philippine government ships approached the area, which Beijing calls Huangyan Island. In response, Chinese forces said they deployed water cannons to push the ships back.
Manila flatly rejected the charge. The Philippine coast guard said two Chinese vessels bombarded its fisheries ship, the BRP Datu Gumbay Piang, with high-pressure water jets for nearly half an hour. The deluge shattered a glass window, injuring a crew member, and caused severe electrical damage, including a short circuit and broken air-conditioning units.
&ldquo;This was not ramming. This was aggression,&rdquo; a Philippine official said, accusing Beijing of dangerous escalation. The incident comes just days after China announced it was designating Scarborough Shoal as a national nature reserve, a move that Manila protested through diplomatic channels.
According to Philippine authorities, a Chinese navy warship also broadcast warnings of &ldquo;live-fire exercises&rdquo; near the shoal, sparking panic among local fishermen. The Filipino ships had been sent to resupply more than 35 fishing boats operating in the area with fuel, water, ice, and other essentials.
The Scarborough Shoal, known as Bajo de Masinloc in the Philippines, has long been a flashpoint. China claims almost the entire South China Sea, despite an international tribunal ruling in 2016 that rejected its sweeping claims. The waters are not only rich in marine life but also of immense strategic importance for global trade.
The clash drew swift reactions from allies. U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio condemned Beijing&rsquo;s actions as &ldquo;yet another coercive move to advance sweeping territorial and maritime claims.&rdquo; The U.K. and Australia echoed concerns, while the Canadian Embassy in Manila said it opposed using environmental protection as a cover for territorial expansion.
As diplomatic protests mount and fishing communities reel from fear, the Scarborough Shoal once again underscores how contested reefs and rocks have become flashpoints for global tensions.
