The United States was gripped by shock and confusion after the fatal shooting of Charlie Kirk, a 31-year-old conservative activist and close ally of former President Donald Trump. The incident occurred at Utah Valley University in Orem, near Salt Lake City, where Kirk was addressing a large outdoor gathering.
Authorities initially reported the arrest of a suspect but later reversed their statement, confirming the gunman remains at large. The Utah Department of Public Safety said the case is an active investigation, with the FBI, Utah County Attorney&rsquo;s office, Utah County Sheriff&rsquo;s office, and local police all involved. Two individuals were briefly detained but released after questioning.
Kirk was struck by a single shot fired from a building roughly 200 yards away at around 12:20 pm, about 20 minutes into his speech. Witnesses reported panic as attendees rushed to safety. Security footage showed a person dressed in dark clothing, possibly firing from a rooftop. The weapon used has not been disclosed.
Governor Spencer Cox condemned the incident as a political assassination, highlighting Kirk&rsquo;s dual identity as a family man and a key conservative voice. Kirk founded Turning Point USA more than a decade ago, building it into an influential organisation that mobilised young voters toward conservative causes. He is survived by his wife and two young children.
The shooting has intensified concerns over rising political violence in the United States, as the manhunt for the suspect continues.
