Chandra Arya, a Liberal Member of Parliament representing Nepean, Ontario, has announced his bid for the leadership of the Liberal Party of Canada. If successful, Arya could become the next Prime Minister, a move that would further highlight the growing influence of Indian-origin leaders in global politics.
Born in 1963 in Dwaralu, Karnataka, India, Arya holds an MBA from Karnatak University&nbsp;in Dharwad. He moved to Canada in 2006 and soon became an active voice for stronger India-Canada business ties, serving as president of the Indo-Canada Ottawa Business Chamber.
A member of the House of Commons since 2015, Arya made history in 2022 as the first MP to speak in Kannada in the Canadian Parliament. Known for his vocal opposition to Khalistani activities, he has been a staunch supporter of India-Canada relations, a position that earned him additional security.
Announcing his candidacy on social media, Arya shared:&nbsp;&ldquo;I am running to become the next Prime Minister of Canada to rebuild our country and ensure prosperity for generations to come. Bold decisions must be made for the good of our children and grandchildren. I am ready to lead such a government.&rdquo;
Arya&rsquo;s leadership bid comes after Prime Minister Justin Trudeau&rsquo;s resignation. Alongside Anita Anand, another Indian-origin contender, his entry adds diversity and competition to the Liberal race.
