Brazil Police said Thursday that former President Jair Bolsonaro was officially charged with participating in a coup attempt after losing the 2022 election to President Luiz In&aacute;cio Lula da Silva.

The proposed indictments against Bolsonaro and 36 other people bring an end to the Brazilian federal police's two-year investigation into the aftermath of the election, which his supporters stormed the presidential palace and other government buildings on January 8, 2023, but which the populist leader never formally conceded.

The Supreme Court has received the final report and has been requested to indict 37 people for the crimes of violently overthrowing the democratic state, coup d'etat, and criminal organisation.

The right-wing leader and his supporters, who were encouraged by President-elect Trump's re-election last month, have suffered a significant blow with the police suggestions.

Bolsonaro wants to run again in 2026 and has pleaded to the court to reverse its order barring him from contesting elections for eight years, due to his misleading statements regarding Brazil's voting system.

According to Bolsonaro's statement on X, he has not yet seen the indictment, which was not made public right away, and he plans to wait until he has discussed the situation with his attorney.

According to the Federal Police, the defendants operated as members of an organised crime group, each assigned specific tasks, such as spreading disinformation, undermining the electoral system, inciting the armed forces to be involved in the rebellion, and carrying out other operational and coercive actions.

The findings of the investigation have been submitted to the Supreme Federal Court, before being forwarded to the Attorney General's Office, where Attorney General Paulo Gonet will review the evidence and decide whether to proceed with the indictment.
