A bomb hidden in an electric scooter killed Lt. General Igor Kirillov, head of Russia&rsquo;s Nuclear, Biological, and Chemical Defence Forces, outside a residential building in Moscow early Tuesday, Russia&rsquo;s Investigative Committee has confirmed.
Kirillov&rsquo;s assistant also died in the blast, which was reportedly triggered remotely, according to Russian state news agency Tass.
The explosion occurred on Ryazansky Prospekt, about 7 km southeast of the Kremlin. Images shared on Russian Telegram channels showed a shattered building entrance, rubble scattered across the area, and two bodies lying in blood-stained snow.
Investigators have launched a criminal case into the attack, and forensic teams are working to establish the circumstances. &ldquo;Investigators, forensic experts, and operational services are on-site,&rdquo; said committee spokesperson Svetlana Petrenko.
The incident comes days after Ukraine&rsquo;s Security Service (SBU) charged Kirillov with using banned chemical weapons, including K-1 grenades, during Russia&rsquo;s military operation in Ukraine, which began in February 2022.
The conflict has seen Russia steadily gain control of nearly one-fifth of Ukrainian territory over the past three years.
