The Australian government has formally designated Terrorgram, a violent nationalist extremist network operating online, as a terrorist organisation under the Criminal Code Act 1995. The decision aligns Australia with the UK and US, which have already taken similar action.
Home Affairs and Cyber Security Minister Tony Burke said the group promotes hate and poses a threat to national safety: &ldquo;This extremist hatred has no place in Australia. We are acting decisively to restrict the activities of such groups and keep Australians safe.&rdquo;
Terrorgram operates primarily on encrypted platforms like Telegram, creating and sharing propaganda that incites attacks against minority communities, infrastructure, and individuals. It has been linked to terrorist activity across the US, Europe, and Asia.
The listing empowers Australian security and law enforcement agencies to take strong action, including arresting individuals who support, fund, or associate with the group &mdash; offences that carry penalties of up to 25 years in prison.
This move also complements counter-terror financing sanctions imposed on Terrorgram in February 2025 under the UN Charter.
The Australian government urged citizens to remain vigilant and report suspicious activity, while reaffirming its commitment to working with global partners to combat terrorism and online extremism.
