Erin Patterson, 50, has been sentenced to a minimum of 33 years in prison for murdering three relatives with a Beef Wellington laced with deadly death cap mushrooms, in what has become one of Australia&rsquo;s most shocking homicide cases.
The meal, served at her home in Leongatha, Victoria, in July 2023, killed her mother-in-law, Gail Patterson, father-in-law, Donald Patterson, and Gail&rsquo;s sister Heather Wilkinson. Heather&rsquo;s husband, Ian Wilkinson, survived after weeks in hospital.
Justice Christopher Beale said the killings were carefully planned and highlighted Patterson&rsquo;s lack of remorse. &ldquo;The devastating impact of your crimes is not limited to your direct victims. Your crimes have harmed a great many people,&rdquo; he said, noting the trauma inflicted on Patterson&rsquo;s own children, who lost their grandparents.
Patterson has been kept in near-continuous solitary confinement for her safety. With time already served, she will be eligible for parole only at age 82, though prosecutors argued she should never be released.
The case also resurfaced allegations from her estranged husband, Simon Patterson, who testified that he once slipped into a coma after eating a chicken korma she had prepared in 2022.
