Artificial intelligence has now stepped into politics, with Albania becoming the first country to appoint an AI-generated government minister dedicated to fighting corruption.
Prime Minister Edi Rama announced the new minister, named Diella, following his fourth consecutive election win in May. Diella, meaning &ldquo;sun&rdquo; in Albanian, will manage all public tender processes to ensure transparency and eliminate corruption, a long-standing issue in the country&rsquo;s administration.
Initially launched in January as a digital assistant for citizens on the e-Albania platform, Diella has already facilitated over 36,000 digital documents and delivered nearly 1,000 services. Now, her role has been expanded to oversee tender-related decisions in the public sector.
Public tenders have historically been at the centre of corruption scandals in Albania, a nation struggling with criminal networks linked to drug and arms trafficking. Experts view this move as a significant step in addressing governance challenges and improving transparency.
Local media described the appointment as a transformation in governance, where technology shifts from being a support tool to an active decision-maker. The initiative also aligns with Albania&rsquo;s efforts to strengthen its bid for European Union membership by tightening anti-corruption measures.
