Air travel across India and several global routes is expected to see widespread disruptions this weekend as nearly 6,000 Airbus A320 family aircraft undergo a mandatory safety-related software update. Airlines worldwide are working to complete the upgrade by early next week, aiming to restore normal operations by December 1 or 2.
In India alone, more than 350 A320-series aircraft operated by IndiGo and the Air India Group will be temporarily grounded for the update, a process estimated to take two to three days depending on the aircraft model.
The decision follows an international safety investigation into a JetBlue flight on October 30. The aircraft, flying from Cancun to Newark, suddenly pitched downward mid-air, injuring 15 passengers before diverting to Tampa for medical assistance.
The US National Transportation Safety Board found that the unexpected nose-down movement resulted from a flight-control system fault triggered by a switching event. Based on these findings, aviation regulators including the European Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) issued mandatory instructions requiring updates across the A320 fleet.
Newer A320 aircraft will need less than 30 minutes for the software upgrade, while older jets may require hardware adjustments, potentially extending the downtime and affecting flight schedules.
Airlines have started notifying travellers about possible delays and rescheduling.
IndiGo stated on X that it is proactively completing the required updates while maintaining complete safety compliance. The carrier warned of minor schedule changes and advised passengers to check updated flight statuses before traveling.
Air New Zealand also confirmed the temporary grounding of its A320 aircraft, calling the move precautionary and assuring there is no immediate safety risk. The airline added that EASA has permitted operations until November 30 (NZ time), allowing some flights to operate before the upgrade begins.
Air India issued a similar advisory, informing passengers that the mandated software and hardware realignment may lead to extended turnaround times and delays. The airline requested customers to check flight updates through its official website and helpline numbers.
Airbus clarified that the corrective update addresses an issue where strong solar radiation could corrupt critical flight-control data on certain A320-family jets. The fix aims to eliminate this risk and ensure uninterrupted safe operations.
