New York City was shaken Monday evening when a deadly shooting unfolded inside a Midtown office building at 345 Park Avenue. Five people, including a New York Police Department officer, were killed, and several others were injured before the lone gunman took his own life.
The suspect, identified as 27-year-old Shane Tamura of Nevada, entered the 44-story skyscraper around 6:30 p.m. armed with a rifle and wearing sunglasses. Surveillance footage shows him approaching the building before opening fire indiscriminately in the lobby area.
Authorities confirmed that Tamura died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound on the 33rd floor after barricading himself.
Among the deceased was Police Officer Didarul Islam, who died in the line of duty while protecting civilians during the chaos.
The building, home to major firms including Blackstone, KPMG, Deutsche Bank, and the NFL headquarters, also houses the Irish Consulate. Owned by Rudin Management, the building went into lockdown as police and emergency units rushed to the scene.
New York Police Commissioner Jessica Disch confirmed the shooter acted alone and the scene was secured.
Mayor Eric Adams and the NYPD urged the public to avoid East 52nd Street between Park and Lexington Avenues due to ongoing investigations and heightened security.
The attack has reignited concerns about gun violence in major cities and the security of commercial spaces during peak hours.
