Jimmy Carter, the 39th President of the United States, passed away at home on Sunday, the Carter Centre in Atlanta announced. While world leaders mourn his death&nbsp;at the age of 100, a small village in Haryana&mdash;renamed Carterpuri after his historic 1978 visit&mdash;continues to carry forward his legacy.
Formally called James Earl Carter&nbsp;Jr, he served as president from 1977 to 1981, was the first US&nbsp;leader to visit India after the Emergency. During his visit to what was then Daulatpur Nasirabad, Carter donated a television set and funds, solidifying a bond that pre-dated his presidency. His mother Lillian Carter&nbsp;had served there as a Peace Corps volunteer in the 1960s.
The village, which was renamed Carterpuri on the suggestion of then Prime Minister Morarji Desai, still celebrates January 3, the date of his visit, as a local holiday. In 2002, they also commemorated his Nobel Peace Prize win for his humanitarian work.

In a statement following Carter&rsquo;s death, U.S. President Joe Biden described him as &ldquo;an extraordinary leader, statesman, and humanitarian,&rdquo; praising his lifelong commitment to peace and service. World leaders, including Egypt&rsquo;s President Abdel Fattah Al-Sisi and France&rsquo;s President Emmanuel Macron, echoed these sentiments, highlighting Carter&rsquo;s role in brokering the Camp David Accords between Israel and Egypt.
Carter&rsquo;s presidency was marked by significant achievements, including the Camp David peace agreement, but it was also fraught with challenges such as the Iran hostage crisis and economic struggles. After leaving office, he dedicated himself to humanitarian efforts through the Carter Center, focusing on conflict resolution, disease eradication, and election monitoring worldwide.
He and his wife Rosalynn Carter, who passed away just six weeks earlier, were also known for their work with Habitat for Humanity, building homes for the underprivileged.
Carter&rsquo;s later years were marred by health challenges, including melanoma that spread to his brain and liver. He entered hospice care in February 2023, choosing comfort over further medical intervention.
Carterpuri remains a living reminder of the former president&rsquo;s enduring legacy&mdash;proof that even fleeting moments of diplomacy can leave lasting impacts across borders.
